Mark Telford is a dog trainer and behaviourist, based in the West of Ireland, where he specialises in fixing dog behaviour problems and also trains dogs in obedience & tracking. His work with dogs started with greyhounds and he was a greyhound trainer, breeder, and stud-keeper for many years. He trained a dog that broke the track record at Mullingar over 600 yards on the old grass surface. The record had previously stood for 34 years.

He bred hundreds of puppies for clients and for himself and reared these and many more, often until they started preparation for racing. he believes the insight this experience provided, gives him a unique perspective in understanding dog behaviour. As he says himself, “It never failed to amaze me how much the pups learned from their mother until weaning and beyond and the respect they had for her, even though she could be very rough with them when they stepped out of line. I realised that the closer training was to the dog’s natural instincts and the more natural to the way dog’s think, the more effective and quicker it became. My whole philosphy and training stems from this belief”.

Yes, indeed you might ask this question, and if you’ve bought this book, the answer lies in the reason you bought it. At the risk of sounding facetious, despite the enormous choice of dog training book to choose from, most of them are worthless. This you already know, if you, like many people, have bought other such books in your life and your poor results have led you to try another book, possibly time and time again.

As I write this, amidst the uncertainty that the COVID-19 pandemic has spread over the world, dog sales and puppy prices have soared. This is undoubtedly due to the rise of people working from home or at least being home more than before the virus hit us. In many cases, the prices and demand for puppies have at least doubled and, in some cases, trebled.

Some may question my credentials or right to advise others, so I will explain my background in dogs.

I grew up around greyhounds that my Dad trained, and as soon as I was old enough to help, I was working with them in all aspects of care, such as walking, feeding, and grooming. As I got older, I began to grasp the rudiments of how to train a racing greyhound, what they need in order to get them fit, maintain fitness through walking and galloping, adjusting weight up or down to premium levels, worming and treating injuries, etc.

Later I would train professionally myself, along with breeding on a large scale that saw me single-handedly operate a kennel facility with around eighty greyhounds of all ages. In addition to training race dogs, I also handled stud dogs and reared hundreds of pups from birth to racing age for myself and for others. This gave me a great insight into dog behaviour as I would oversee many dogs from birth to racing and the different stages and cycles pups go through in their formative months.

You should approach this training book with an open mind. You may read things that appear morally wrong to you or seem against the grain, but if you try the methods as described, you will reap the rewards of every objective. Therefore, you should suspend your judgement totally until you’ve done the work and trained the dog. Having an open mind will also enable you to learn the utmost of how the dog thinks and behaves, free from the shackles of preconceived notions and ideas. After all, if you were such an expert, you wouldn’t have bought the book. This book may challenge you, and it may be that you’re not ready for it. If that’s the case, you can try other methods and other books and come back to it when you are ready. It will  make you a decent trainer and improve the bond you have with your dog if you apply the information with any degree of seriousness and application.

It may be that you have some experience, but have had mixed results with training up until now. That’s fine. If you start driving lessons with a bad instructor, then change to a better one, your driving improves. Everyone can improve in anything. Nobody knows everything.
